Wednesday, November 16, 2016 IT'S A GO!!! Hello, neighbors! After meeting with New Bethel Church on 157th tonight, they have willingly agreed to host our community meetings. This was after submitting written information about the program and making a verbal presentation to their board. What we have in mind as the organizer, is to try and on the 2nd, third or fourth Saturday of any month starting in December with the first gathering that will be a "Meet and Greet" with every one bringing their own snacks and non alcoholic beverages, a "Christmas Neighborhood Cheer" get together. The Saturday can be scheduled with the majority of neighbors providing their preferred date. These meetings do not have to be monthly, but will be scheduled per committed neighbors. What we need is a commitment of at least 25 to 30 neighbors in order to organize a gathering. The second meeting will be to invite The Marion County Sherriff Dept and the third will be open to anyone who would like to provide a short presentation about a business or community service they are doing or would like to do. All get-togethers will be enjoyable, casual and include everyone, and will not be a town meeting. There are no officers, directors, membership or dues, and no speeches or reports. Just neighbors being friendly. We hope to have fun and laugh a WHOLE LOT!!! There will be a chance for anyone to express any concerns and get everyone's suggestions and opinions. We are not associated with The Home Owners Association and we ask that this not be a recruitment meeting for them. They have their own monthly meetings and agenda and we ask that concerns about them or from any of the members who come be reserved and addressed to them. We are open to ALL community residents, and we ask that this one request be followed. We could not meet at The Clubhouse because we do not have any monetary means to rent the facility, which is $130 to non members- $100 to members with a $50 deposit in case of cleaning. These are all our ideas to get started and we welcome any and all suggestions and responses. So, what we need now is a confirmation from all you wonderful neighbors who have supported us in our effort to bring our community together for a common goal of awareness and hospitality. We now have 185 neighbors on our outreach list, increasing every day. We plan on getting back out into our community soon. We are very grateful to: New Bethel Church at Orange Blossom Hills for their hospitality to our community. Thank you so much for being a good neighbor! Janet LaCroix spokesperson/organizer

Emory Schley: See local government from the inside MARION COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE·WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2016 Marion County Sheriff's Citizens Academy teaches citizens, you and me, about all the enormous work that goes on behind the scenes in law enforcement and related fields. Government is a huge, largely unwieldy operation that affects our lives daily. It spreads all across our society and extends its tentacles into just about everything we do: health care, traffic safety, what you can do and what you cannot do with your property, what you can sell or buy, who gets or does not get governmental relief. It's an endless list. But one of the biggest services local government provides is protection of its citizens through law enforcement. That one facet, in itself, is monstrously complicated and involves thousands of individuals from the janitor all the way up to the very top. Trying to figure out our place in such a mammoth operation is almost enough to cause severe headaches and depression. However, there is ONE program out there — and freely available to all — that makes a valiant attempt at defining where we all fit into the system and how the system works to serve us. The program is called the Marion County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, and it teaches citizens, you and me, about all the enormous work that goes on behind the scenes in law enforcement and related fields. Meetings are once a week during the 13-week course, which obviously requires a considerable investment of your time. But being as Dearly Beloved and I participated in a Citizens’ Academy earlier this year, I can assure you the time you spend in that course is worth every golden moment. There is a lot to be learned, and many insights to be gained by attending. You’ll spend time in the classroom, go to the Inmate Work Farm on Maricamp Road, visit the jail and its various facilities, even go to the courthouse and get to see the courtroom from the judge’s point of view. You will also see how prisoners are securely taken to the courtroom and get a view of the situation from their unenviable position. It’s all quite enlightening! I HIGHLY recommend this course. There will be two classes starting in January, one on Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at The Villages Mulberry Recreation Center starting Jan. 24; the other at Master the Possibilities in On Top of the World on Thursday mornings 9 to 11:30 a.m. starting Jan. 26. Registration for the OTOW class is open to everyone but must be done through Master the Possibilities. Call 854-3699 or go to MasterThePossibilities.com. Both courses run for 13 weeks. It’s kind of like being in school again, but without the tests, the fees or the homework.
To apply, visit the MCSO website at www.marionso.com and fill out an application. For more information, contact Volunteer Coordinator Kassi Reidt at kreidt@marionso.com or call her at 369-6849. And of course, you can tell her Emory sent you! Sunday, November 13, 2016 Good Sunday evening, neighbors! Just an update on our very own Orange Blossom Hills Coyotes. A neighbor on SE 89th Ct was out in their garage at night and low and behold a coyote whizzed on by! We have found various unsightly debris that obviously did not come from any neighbors' large dog. Also, on our lawn a not very good account of an animal that got sick and decided to leave it for us in the morning!! So, we have purchased "wolf urine", soaked it in wool fleece strips and nailed it to trees on our property so the coyotes will not want our precious little Chihuahuas for breakfast, lunch or dinner. PS If you want to try this method of warding off our friendly coyote population from getting your pets, be prepared, the stuff "STINKS!" Our coyote population can be heard howling frequently at night Especially when there are sirens
